Read the passage and answer the questions 9 to 12 on the base of your understanding of the passage:
In the contemporary period, two dramatically opposed schools of thought, scientific materialism and religious thought, agree on one key point: that religion and science are in total conflict. Let us sketch the basic position of each of these schools and learn why they agree on this point. Scientific materialism makes the epistemological assumption that the empirical method of science is the only reliable procedure for obtaining knowledge and the metaphysical assumption that physical stuff (i.e., matter and energy) is the ultimate reality of the universe. Auxiliary assumptions that complete the view of scientific materialism include the claim that only the entities studied by science are real and the claim that only science can reveal what is real. After all, science allegedly works from publicly observable, reproducible data that are taken to confirm and disconfirm its theories. Hence, science is said to be properly objective. Religious beliefs, by contrast, are not as readily connected to such data as scientific theories and thus are said to be subjective, parochial, and uncritical.
